Equity release lender More 2 Life is hosting a series of roadshows to educate advisers about opportunities in the retirement lending market.
The breakfast seminars begin on 14 April and will include webinars for advisers unable to make the events.
The roadshows come at a time when pensions are undergoing massive changes with a relaxation of a number of rules opening up new investment options for retirees. Some commentators predict the ‘interest-only time bomb’ will add to the growth potential for equity release.
Simon Little, founder and owner of The Equity Release Group, will be a guest speaker at the roadshows, explaining the opportunities and threats that will present themselves over the coming months.
The new pension rules come into effect on 6 April. From that date those with defined contribution pension schemes will no longer be obliged to buy an annuity that guarantees an income for life, and instead can spend or invest their pension pot how they like.
However, both retirees and advisers should be aware that only the first 25% of a pension pot can be taken tax-free. After that withdrawals are taxed at the saver’s marginal rate.
The new rules have led to various predictions and warnings, including one that people will cash in their pension pot and blow it on cars and holidays.
More relevant to the mortgage industry is the prediction that the new rules will see a new influx of money into buy to let.
