BuildwellAI launches to tackle the £21bn cost of UK construction errors
BuildwellAI, a compliance intelligence platform for the UK construction industry, has officially launched. Built for contractors, inspectors and asset owners, the platform captures, connects and validates information across documentation, inspection and verification, giving project teams a single, defensible record of what was built, how it was verified, and why it complies.
Led by Ben Smallwood, who brings more than a decade of experience in construction risk management, building control and major projects warranty provision to the role, BuildwellAI is built to solve the compliance gaps he encountered first-hand throughout his career.
Developed specifically for the UK construction environment, BuildwellAI is the compliance layer for the construction industry. It combines computer vision, automation and best-in-class construction intelligence to maintain a real-time ‘golden thread’ and produce a connected record built to stand up to gateway reviews and regulatory scrutiny.
The launch comes as construction faces growing pressure to raise quality and accountability. The Get It Right Initiative estimates that avoidable errors cost UK construction around £21 billion a year, close to a fifth of total industry output, much of it traced to poor data, late defect detection and fragmented record-keeping. Under the Building Safety Act, that record-keeping now carries direct regulatory and commercial liability across an asset’s full lifecycle.
Five connected applications, one system
- BuildwellEYE: AI video analysis for real-time defect detection, safety monitoring and site surveillance.
- BuildwellINSPECT: streamlined, photo-led inspection workflows with automated, audit-ready reporting.
- BuildwellCHAT: instant, reliable answers to technical construction questions, with access to drawings and built-in tools.
- BuildwellNEWS: curated UK construction and regulatory updates, delivered daily.
- BuildwellTHREAD: golden thread documentation management with automated audit trails and compliance tracking.
Ben Smallwood, CEO of BuildwellAI, commented:
“Construction runs on trust, but day to day it still runs on paperwork, spreadsheets, and gut feel. Too many problems only surface once they have become expensive to fix, and under the Building Safety Act, the liability now follows you for the life of the building.
“We built BuildwellAI to change that. By connecting documentation, inspection, and verification in one place, teams can prove what was built, how it was checked, and why it complies while the work is still happening, not years later. The goal is simple: help the industry get it right the first time, and be able to show it.”
